Title

LOWER URINARY TRACT PROBLEMS IN YOUNG ADULTS WITH PREVIOUS VESICO-URETERAL REFLUX AND CONTROLS

Introduction and objective

Vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR), the most common congenital malformation of the upper urinary tract, is linked both to pyelonephritis and renal scarring. VUR is also associated with lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction in infancy, but less is known regarding the long-term prognosis of these problems. We wanted to fill this gap of knowledge

Method

A questionnare was provided to 483 young adults who all had been treated for dilating VUR in infancy and to 640 healthy controls. Questions were asked regarding urinary voiding habits and bladder-related problems

Results

Answers were received by 222 previous VUR patients and 269 controls. Their demographics are presented in Table 1. The informants responses to LUT questions are shown in Table 2. Note that the higher pregnancy rate in the VUR group was controlled for in the statistical analyses. [the submission system doesn't allow me to paste tables]

Conclusion

Young adults with vesico-ureteral reflux during infancy have an increased risk for symptoms suggesting underlying detrusor overactivity.
