Title

MEDIUM AND LONG-TERM RESULTS OF BOTULINUM TOXIN TREATMENT IN PATIENTS WITH BLADDER AUGMENTATION.

Introduction and objective

Botulinum toxin treatment is considered second line in those patients with overactive bladder in whom oral treatment does not work or is contraindicated. However, there are not many studies demonstrating its usefulness in patients with bladder augmentation.
We present our results after performing an observational study in order to know the functional results as well as adverse effects and complications with this therapy.

Method

Observational study between 2012-2023, including patients with a history of bladder enlargement and follow-up of up to 132 months.
The statistical study was carried out using ISPSS 2.0 in order to know the functional results, need for new injection and complications.

Results

A total of 41 procedures were performed in 14 patients. In 24%, punctures were performed only in the bladder remnant and 76% in bladder and bowel patch. The continence rate achieved was 61%, as well as a TBS 1-2 scale score of 85%.
The mean time to symptom onset was 77 months, and the mean time to symptom recurrence was 9 months. No statistically significant differences were found for age, gender, neurogenic bladder or previous oral treatment. The complication rate was 7% (Clavien Dindo 2: non-febrile UTI).

Conclusion

Botulinum toxin injection is an effective and feasable treatment, with a low rate of complications and high patient satisfaction which allows good continence rates, although it requires several injections during follow-up.
