Abstract General Information

Title

INFANTILE ENURESIS, A ROUTINE QUESTION DURING HOSPITALIZATION

Introduction and objective

Between 5 and 10% of school-age children suffer from enuresis, in Latin America there is a record of studies carried out in Brazil in which the prevalence of enuresis was 42% (21/50),at the local level, the prevalence of enuresis is unknown in Bolivia.

Method

A prospective, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of all patients between 5 and 13 years old hospitalized at the Hospital del Niño during the months of June and July 2023

Results

The final analysis included 69 patients hospitalized in different services with diagnoses specific to their pathology, in which an interview was conducted to identify secondary enuresis. The mean ± standard deviation of the age of the patients at the time of hospitalization was 8.57 + - 2.31 (range 5 to 13 years). The presence of secondary enuresis was in 7.2% (5/69), female 80% (4/5), male 20% (1/5), the mean age of the patients at the time of their diagnosis of enuresis was 10 (range 6 to 12 years), being 80% (4/5) female, 100% (5/5) have a history of enuresis in their parents. Sphincter control and diaper abandonment occurred equally between the age of less than 2 years and 2 to 5 years in 40.0% (2/5), fluid intake per day 80.0% (4/5) is lower to 1 liter, 80.0% (4/5) refer to consuming coke, 60.0% (3/5) present diuresis less than 5 times a day, 60.0% (3/5) have constipation, 100% (5 /5) reported having a feeling of shame, 100% (5/5) reported not having visited the doctor or psychologist.

Conclusion

We found no association between the presence of enuresis with the variables age, gender, family history, sphincter control, diaper abandonment, fluid intake, diuresis, and constipation. We identified that in 100% (5/5) of the cases they reported having a feeling of shame for enuresis, in none of the cases did they go to seek medical treatment. This study paves the way for the importance of identifying enuresis in all hospitalized patients, because in the 69 (100%) patients in the study, 5 (7.2%) patients with enuresis were identified, all of them with feelings of shame in response to pathology. Being a cross-sectional study and small sample size gives us limitations, future prospective, multicenter work is required to provide more answers in relation to the pathology.
