Title

CLINICAL PHENOTYPING OF CHILDREN WITH NOCTURNAL ENURESIS: A KEY CLASSIFICATION TO APPROACH IMPROVEMENT

Introduction and objective

Evidence shows the NE not as an isolated phenomenon of urinary loss during sleep, is currently known for its heterogeneous pathophysiological mechanisms, multifactorial aetiology, course of progression/remission, and varied response to treatment. However, the understanding of the clinical and physiological relationship of these systemic manifestations still is a challenge. Knowing details from NE literature such as how, which or how often these manifestations appear related to NE, may provide better insights of integrated clinical manifestations, allowing the categorization in domains and phenotyping model development.

Method

This study developed of a phenotyping model for children with NE based on an analytical and methodological review of the literature and a bibliometric analysis carried out from May 2022 to September 2022, about EN and its associated clinical manifestations. After reading and analysing the literature, the clinical manifestations were categorised into domains and submitted to the validation of an expert committee with extensive experience in their specific area of expertise. The visual representation of the categorised model was developed to aim for the phenotyping concept easily understood to all professionals.

Results

This review reported 536 articles, 76 were included for analysis and full reading. The trend topics network map brought a total of 2,545 unique terms registered in the articles, but only the 744 main terms were included to generate the co-occurrence network and, thus, obtain adequate readability. The result of the bibliometric review and analysis showed the main scenarios and clinical manifestations present in NE, and allowed researchers to categorize these manifestations into domains; validate the categorization with an expert committee and develop the phenotyping model for children with EN.

Conclusion

This study enabled the development of a phenotyping model for children with NE based on evidence that will make important contributions to the clinical field and future studies.
