Title

A NURSING OUTPATIENT CLINIC IN PEDIATRIC UROLOGY: AN EXPERIENCE REPORT

Introduction and objective

Bowel and bladder dysfunctions (BBD) are common in children, affecting their quality of life. BBD can involve alterations in bladder filling and emptying phases, and functional constipation. Nurses play a crucial role in pediatric urology, providing guidance and implementing urotherapy patterns (PU), the first-line treatment for BBD. This study reports nursing care experiences for children with BBD and lower urinary tract dysfunction at a uropediatrics outpatient clinic

Method

The study was an experience report by members of "Ambulatório de Enfermagem em Uropediatria" at Universidade Federal do Paraná, Brazil. The project involved four nursing students supervised by a specialist and two professors. Activities included classes, article discussions, nursing consultations, educational materials creation, and health events organization.

Results

The project conducts weekly nursing consultations for pediatric patients with BBD and lower urinary tract infections. Health education is provided during consultations and on Instagram. The project collaborates with the pediatric surgery team and a pelvic physiotherapist. Students receive training through weekly sessions with the nurse, including lectures and discussions. Consultations educate on self-catheterization and pediatric urology, with individualized plans. Interprofessional collaboration and knowledge exchange are promoted.

Conclusion

The project offers valuable experiences for future nurses, fostering autonomy and learning. Engaging in extension projects is essential for professional training, broadening knowledge, and analyzing diverse realities.
