Title

DIGITAL HISTORY BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE OF BLADDER AND BOWEL SYMPTOMS IN CHILDHOOD: A METHODOLOGICAL STUDY

Introduction and objective

The present study aimed to describe the production process of a digital history prototype based on the experience of urinary symptoms and intestinal disorders in children aged 6 to 12 years. The construction of digital history was based on in the references of the translation of knowledge and the approach based on the arts, because it is a sensitive methodology to capture and transmit information, emotions, history and culture, adapting to the child target audience, with a view to supporting the communication process of professionals who work in the context of health care pediatric urology.

Method

This is a methodological study conducted in 2021 at a federal higher education institution. The script of a digital story was developed, based on the results of a mixed-method research, conducted with parents, children and health professionals. Based on the script, storyboard and digital video were developed, bringing as main character a girl with urinary and intestinal symptoms, since such symptoms are prevalent in females. The most frequent urinary symptom that was represented in the history was urinary urgency accompanied by constipation. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee, under opinion n° 3.133.554.

Results

Based on the script, the storyboard was created in the "Storyboard That" app by the present authors. Characters, scenarios and main speeches were represented, using language accessible to the target audience. The video animation was developed in "Animaker", showing the audiovisual representation of the story. It was presented the journey of the character Malu, who managed to overcome her difficulties and fears, achieving improvement of her symptoms.

Conclusion

The process of producing a prototype digital history based on the experience of urinary and intestinal symptoms in children aged 6 to 12 years has the potential to be applied as a knowledge translation tool, specially designed for the pediatric public. In addition, the prototype of the digital story developed aims to encourage children with urinary and intestinal symptoms to feel protagonists in their self-care journey and able to (self)manage their symptoms.
