Title

EDUCATIONAL VIDEO ABOUT TOILET TRAINING FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN

Introduction and objective

The acquisition of sphincter control is an important milestone of child development, which occurs naturally, but can be optimized by proper training. The lack of access by parents and caregivers to information on how and when to conduct toilet training makes it one of the most challenging moments in early childhood and generates the need to seek ways to disseminate this knowledge. Considering that digital resources are currently strong allies of the new health education model, the objective of this study was to develop an evidence-based educational video in simple language about toilet training for parents and caregivers of children with typical neuropsychomotor development.

Method

This is a narrative review of the literature followed by the development of an educational video on toilet training. In the first phase, a search was carried out in the electronic databases of Pubmed and Cochrane, covering the period from 1960 to 2021, using the descriptors: toilet training, potty training, bladder and bowel control and children. In the second phase, the review data were organized and served as the basis for the creation of an educational video on toilet training for parents and caregivers, developed on the Sparkol Videoscribe platform and the Audacity program for sound design.

Results

A total of 1193 studies were found, and 87 articles were selected for full reading. The training methods cited in the studies were 'Child-Oriented Approach', 'Operant Conditioning', 'Elimination Communication' and 'Toilet Training'. Based on the review, an educational video was produced, in Portuguese, entitled “My child will start toilet training, and now?”, finished in MP4 format, lasting four minutes and twenty-seven seconds, which was based on the methods by Brazelton and Azrin & Foxx, as they respect the physical and psychological maturation of the child, as well as the guidelines of the International Children's Continence Society.

Conclusion

In the present study, the educational video “My child will start toilet training, and now?” was developed, with standard guidelines on toilet training for parents and caregivers of children in general.
